Shades of Pink Interview - Eden Summers
After giving you teasers of the stories included in the Shades of Pink Charity Anthology in September, this month I'll tell you a little more about the authors involved. I interviewed them with questions about their contributions, their writing life, their works in progress...
Today, Eden Summers
Kallysten - First, thank you again for taking part in this project, and for helping me recruit many of the authors who ended up contributing. When we first talked about this, you told me you weren’t too fond of very short stories. How did you come up with the idea for ‘Dirty Strategy,’ and was it hard (no pun intended!) to keep it short?
Eden Summers - It’s always hard ;)
Sorry. I find it hard to drag my mind out of the gutter. For me, I find it hard to create a connection in short stories. Novellas I’m fine with, but shorts are really tricky. So Dirty Strategy was a challenge.
The story came alive quite a while ago. My husband is an AFL (Australian Football League) nut. He lives and breathes the sport and so do our two boys. I suppose after watching so many games, it was only natural that I came up with a story about the sexy, lean sportsmen. However, when I first told some writer friends about it, they were skeptical that an Aussie sport romance would do well on an international level. This is my way of testing the waters I suppose. Not that there is any actual ‘field’ sport in this one, but it’s a start.
I also love ménage. So I thought what’s better than having a sexy, professional football housemate? Two sexy, professional football housemates, with both of them eager to get you into bed.
K - The entire piece is from Miranda’s point of view, and I started thinking about what was going on in the men’s heads. I like to imagine they’d been discussing doing something like this for a while but holding each other back for fear of losing Miranda. Am I anywhere close? Can you give us a hint of what they were thinking/feeling when they heard her say she was leaving?
ES - Totally. They’ve both wanted her, but a real life ménage relationship isn’t common. They didn’t know how to address their feelings…well, not until she decides to move out. Then they have no choice but to go in head first (no pun intended) with barely little thought as to what they will do to try and stop her.
The men are quite different though. One of them has more of a physical attraction while the other is more interested in a deeper emotional connection. I’ll let you decide which.
K - The story ends with a double promise that there is more to come. Can we expect to see more about Miranda and her men in the future?
ES - When I wrote Dirty Strategy I had ideas of making it the introduction to a series of novellas. I have a lot of story concepts for hunky footballers... I’m just not sure when or if they will be written.
K - The heroes in ‘Dirty Strategy’ are football players, and looking at your backlist, some of your other hunks are firefighters, rock stars or professional men… Wait… I had a question but I think my mind just wandered off to all those lovely mental images! Do you want to tell us a little about your heroes and how they come to life for you? Do they share common traits or are they all as different as their occupations?
ES - I write what I love—or what attracts me. I love a man in uniform (my husband is a contract fireman). I also love men of power, fame and fortune, so that is usually who I write about. I love dominance. I lurve men who are confident in themselves and the decisions they make. I also love a woman who throws them completely off kilter. Most of my heroes are similar with their sarcastic humor and self assurance but I like to think they’re all different in other ways.
K - Can you tell us about your current writing project or next release?
ES - At the time of filling out this interview, I’m putting the finishing touches on Passionate Addiction (the second novel in the Reckless Beat rock star series) before I send it off to my editor. Once I hit send on that email and have to wait for my edits, I’m torn between starting another erotic contemp romance because that’s what my publisher wants…or writing what my heart is demanding—a paranormal/fantasy romance.
K - Would you care to share an excerpt from it?
ES - I’m going to be really nasty and say ‘No’. A lot of secrets are revealed at the start of Passionate Addiction and I don’t want to ruin it for anyone… Sorry. However, I will attach a quote from my most recent release – Ravenous.
K - Thank you again for being a part of Shades of Pink. Any last word before I let you go back to your writing?
ES - Thank you so much for the opportunity to participate in this anthology and thank you to those who support this great cause.
