Excerpt from Maybe Another Time, a BBW Vampire Romance Novella

The club On The Edge is such a fun setting to write in that I can't help coming back to it, both with the original menage for an ongong series and with additional couple as standalone stories. I'd like to show you the first meeting of one of these couples, Zoe and Lucien...
“Evening, sir. What can I get you?”

The barmaid on the other side of the counter gave him a frank smile as she waited for his answer, and while he saw her eyes drift briefly toward his neck, she gave no outward sign of fear, revulsion, or even pity. Lisa had trained her staff well.

He pulled the card from his pocket and laid it on the counter.

“Lisa mentioned you have an excellent wine selection. Do you have a list to show me?”

“Sure thing.”

She reached for a leather-encased booklet under the counter and handed it to him. She didn’t set it down on the counter, he noticed, but actually put it in his hand.

“Do you need a minute to look at it or do you have a question for me maybe?”

“A minute or two sounds good,” he said, impressed despite himself by the selection he found when he opened the wine list. “I’ll let you know when I’m ready.”

He started running a finger down the list of reds, stopping here and there to check the price of a particular bottle. Behind him, the group was still laughing until an authoritative voice—the bride, maybe?—said a little louder to be heard over the giggles, “All right, ladies. Time to go vampire hunting. Back here in ten minutes, and whoever returns with the sexiest vampire wins!”

There was some squabbling as to who would decide on the degrees of sexiness, whether female vampires were within the rules, and whether a ‘really hunky piece of human masculinity’ might be an acceptable substitute, and then the group left the table in a clatter of chairs and giggles. Abandoning for a second his perusing of the wine list, Lucien turned to watch them go and wondered if it was worth it to go down with them and see if one of them would care to ‘hunt’ him.

He ended up snorting to himself and returning his attention to Cabernets and Sauvignons. Who was he kidding? Just because one girl might have winked at him, and just because this group seemed intent on meeting vampires, if only for their game, it didn’t mean that this place was any different from other clubs or blood bars.

He chose a red, not the most expensive on the list, but a good year, and closed the folder to signal to the barmaid he was ready to order. She caught his eye from the other end of the bar where she was helping another customer and nodded once to show she’d be with him soon.

“Is that the wine list? May I see it please?”

He turned to his left, where a woman had taken the empty stool between Lucien and another man. She was wearing one of those teal t-shirts, though she’d paired it with jeans rather than the skirts or shorts the other girls were sporting. She had much more generous curves than her cohorts, and the t-shirt was stretched tight across her chest, revealing the outline of her bra. She had just a touch of make-up on, a golden shadow over her eyelids that brightened her deep brown eyes and a mere shimmer of pink on her lips that accentuated the sensual curve of her mouth. He wouldn’t mind being her prey in that game, he thought to himself.

However, when, without a word, he slipped the folder toward her, she merely flashed him an absentminded smile and started to look through the list of wines. She was on his left; she might not have seen his scar and realized what he was.

“You’re not going to hunt vampires with your friends?” he couldn’t help asking.

She looked back up at him, still smiling though now it seemed forced.

“Nah, I don’t think so. I prefer my men hot-blooded, if you know what I mean.”

A chuckle passed Lucien’s lips, redoubling when she blushed and quickly added, “And I swear that wasn’t a pick up line. God, maybe I’ve had too much to drink already.”

She closed the folder and started to slip off the stool. Lucien couldn’t have said why he covered her hand with his on the counter, stopping her.

“I’m about to ask the barmaid to open a fairly expensive bottle of wine,” he said when she raised a questioning eyebrow at him. “I’m sure it will taste much better if I have company to drink it.”

She seemed to hesitate. After a look at the empty group table behind them, she asked, “Just one glass, then?”

Do they end up having more than one glass? Well, you'll have to read the story to know for sure, but there wouldn't be mch to tell if they didn't!
