Dancing with Dragons: Anna Lowe tells all!

After interviewing Decadent Kane's dragon a few days ago and working up to my own dragon shifter release on April 25th, I continue exploring the world of dragons by talking to author Anna Lowe...

What is it about dragons that made your muse decide ‘this is what we’re writing!’?

A dragons is the ultimate alpha hero, I think. I’ve loved dragons ever since reading Anne McCaffrey’s “The Dragonriders of Pern” as a kid. Who could be a better lover/partner/protector than a fire-breathing, flying dragon? And who could be better matched to one than the gutsy heroines I love to write?

I loved that series too! Does your story/series take place on Earth, or is it in a different dimension/world like Pern? Are dragons ‘out’ in your world?

My brand-new ALOHA SHIFTERS series is set on the island of Maui, where shifters live in secret among humans in our familiar world. Well, make that the world the residents of Hawaii are familiar with -- one with swaying palms, balmy temperatures, and sandy beaches! But amidst all that beauty lies danger, too, and the shifters of Koa Point (a band of battle-hardened shapeshifters transitioning back to civilian life after a decade of Special Forces service) must toe a fine line between letting their wild sides run free and keeping their true identities secret.

I had the chance to visit one of the Hawaiian islands a few years back and I must say I approve of your choice of locale! Coming back to dragons, are there traditional characteristics you absolutely wanted your dragons to have, or did you want to give them new abilities or powers?

My ALOHA SHIFTERS dragons are traditional in that they’re huge, can breathe fire, and fly. I won’t give away the secret, but they have a very unique form of mating bite which seals the eternal bond between the dragon and his mate. In human form, my dragon shifters are tall men who might remind you of Olympic swimmers -- the big guys who swim butterfly, with incredibly broad shoulders and lumps of muscle along both arms. (This is a slight departure from the dragon shifter women of my zany SHIFTERS IN VEGAS series, but I love both!)

What’s the ‘fun’ part about writing dragons?

I love the raw chemistry between men of such power and their mates, and I love how the secret of shifter existence throws additional tension into the mix. According to ancient lore, humans are off-limits to these dragons, but they can’t help but fight for the women they love.
Other fun parts about writing dragons? Well, the skimming-over-volcanic-ridgelines of Maui, for one thing, or soaring over the moonlit Pacific on a balmy night.

Oh, I can just see that image in my mind... Mmm...
Are there other paranormal beings you enjoy writing? Do they live in the same universe as your dragons or are they strictly separate? If they’re in the same universe, what is their relationship like with dragons?

Yes - my ALOHA SHIFTERS series is based around a group of Special Forces vets who are shifters of various species. There are dragons, wolves, bears, and tigers - to begin with, at least! Those guys are a tight band of brothers, but they have mortal foes, too - shifters and human alike. The dragons are, of course, top dog in one sense, but believe me, the wolves, bears, and tigers more than hold their own weight when it comes to combat on the ground. When it comes to “combat” of the heart, they’re all a little klutzy, though!

Aren't all men? *grins* Thank you Anna for telling us about your dragons and how you write them!

LURE OF THE DRAGON, Aloha Shifters, Book 1
(Out now in paperback, launches April 18 in ebook)

Good dragons? Bad dragons? Twenty-four hours ago, private chef Tessa Byrne didn’t know about the terrifying world of shifters. Now she knows too much, like the fact that a ruthless dragon lord is determined to claim her — forever. Tessa flees to Maui, where sunny skies, swaying palms, and a handsome stranger conspire to play tricks with her heart. Can she truly trust Kai Llewellyn and his band of battle-hardened shapeshifters to save her from a gruesome fate?

Don’t trust a human, and never, ever fall in love with one. Those are lessons Kai learned the hard way. But Tessa is different. Her emerald eyes mirror the mysterious pendant she wears, and her flaming red hair makes his heart race. Is his inner dragon just greedy for a new kind of treasure, or is Tessa his destined mate?

USA Today and Amazon best selling author Anna Lowe loves putting the “hero” back into heroine and letting location ignite a passionate romance. She is a teacher who loves dogs, sports, and travel – and letting those inspire her fiction. On any given weekend, you might find her hiking in the mountains or hunched over her laptop, working on her latest story – be that travel romance, adventure romance, or paranormal romance. Either way, the day will end with a chunk of dark chocolate and a good read.
