Dancing with Dragons: a talk with Rinelle Grey's Dragon Hero...

I continue my countdown to the release of my first dragon shifter book, Mated, as part of the Prowlers & Growlers box set, with another look at what it's like to write - or be - a dragon. After Decadent Kane and Anna Lowe, today we peek into Rinelle Grey's world, and talk to one of her dragons...

Could you tell us a little about you?

Good day. My name is Verrian. Prince Verrian. I’m the second youngest son in my family, and I’ve just woken up from a long sleep. Three hundred years, so they tell me. And can I tell you, the world has changed quite a bit in that time. I’m still trying to figure it all out.

If it makes you feel better, I'm still working on figuring it out too, and I'm fully human... at least as far as I know! Could you tell us a little about the dragon part of you?

I am a dragon. I can shift into human form, true, and my people do spend quite a bit of time as a human, but really, deep down, I’m all dragon. I’m a sound dragon, which means I can use sound in all sorts of weird and wonderful ways. Except as a weapon. I haven’t figured that one out yet. Which is a problem, because my clan is at war.

Can you tell us about the first time you shifted into a dragon?

Well, the first time I shifted since I woke, well, that might have caused a few problems. You see, the people here haven’t heard of dragons, and, well, this reporter managed to get a photo of me. It’s pretty blurry, so hopefully no one is going to believe it. But… well, I think I need to be a little more careful in future.

Oh, so dragons aren't ‘out’ in your world... Or at least not yet?

Everyone is not supposed to know about them. We’re a little concerned about humans and their weapons you see. Dragons may be big and powerful, but the way these humans keep making weapons, well, it’s a bit of a worry. It’s much safer to keep quiet, and stick to ourselves.
Except for that reporter who got a photo of me. And who won’t leave us alone. I don’t know what we’re going to do about her.

Now forgive me if I’m being nosy but what is romance like for dragons? Do you date shifters exclusively or do you date ‘regular’ humans too?

Our clan has stuck to their own kind for many years. All the humans wanted to kill us, you see. That’s why we left England and hid out in the quiet country of what you now call Australia. We stayed away from the humans, and they stayed away from us. Until, for some reason, my brother sent a human to wake me. Now I’m stuck in the human world, and, well, it’s actually pretty fascinating.

As is this human woman. There seems to be something special about the romance between humans and dragons, or at least, that’s the best explanation I can come up with as to why I just can’t get this human out of my mind!

Of course, there’s a bit of a problem with that. When dragons sleep with the same woman three times, they’re mated for life. That’s never been a problem for me before, but now, when I can’t keep my hands off her. Well…

I see... *smiles* One last question and I'll let you go so you can figure it out. What’s your favorite part about being a dragon? And you least favorite one?

That’s easy. The best part of being a dragon is flying. Do you have any idea what it feels like, to stretch your wings and soar as high as you’d like? There’s nothing else like it.

Of course, when we’re trying to keep our existence a secret, you don’t get much of a chance for flying. Being an earthbound dragon is not so much fun at all. I’m a little tired of hiding who I am.

I can imagine, yes. Here's hoping you can take to the sky again soon!

Sleeping Dragon

Sleeping Beauty never looked this hot!

It’s finally Lisa’s turn to wake her very own dragon prince with a kiss (and more). She’s been waiting for her chance to sleep with one of the hot shifters since she first saw them. What she didn’t need was the added pressure of a battle raging outside at the time.

Prince Verrian wakes to the shocking news that he’s been asleep for three hundred years. In that time everything he’s ever known has changed. Some of the changes, like the gorgeous human woman who woke him, are good. Others, not so much.

When they step outside his chamber, they find that friend and enemy alike have disappeared, leaving them alone in the middle of the Australian outback, with no vehicle and no phone reception.

And no idea who won the battle.

Sleeping Dragon is part 1 in the six part, Dragon Echoes serial. It follows on from the Dragon Ruins serial.

If you read a Rinelle Grey story, you can trust in a happy ending. Love will always triumph, even if it seems impossible… Rinelle Grey writes feel-good romance usually in science fiction or fantasy settings. Her heroines are independent and headstrong, and her stories are hard to put down. She grew up in a remote area of Australia, without power, hot water, or a phone, but now lives with all of those and her (happily ever after) husband, daughter, chooks, ducks and veggie garden.
