Dancing With Dragons - K.C. Stewart and her dragons...

One more look into the world of dragon shifters and their writers today, with an interview with K.C. Stewart, another one of the Prowlers & Growlers box set authors. Previous interviews featured Decadent Kane, Anna Lowe, and Rinelle Grey.

What is it about dragons that made your muse decide ‘this is what we’re writing!’?

Honestly? I was watching Supernatural (S6E12 “Like a Virgin”) and at the time I had been trying to come up with a new character to write flash fiction as. Dragons seemed awesome and the boom hadn’t happened yet with them. So Dacea and Silas were born.

Oh flash fiction1 I used to write some regularly and met a few new characters through it, too! But back to you story. Does it take place on Earth, or is it in a different dimension/world? Are dragons ‘out’ in your world?

It takes place in Philly for the most part. I like having my supernatural creatures hidden from humans. I think it adds a realistic element to it. If humans were to find out I think they would freak. I’ve always been too scared to write a story that “outs” a creature. That just seems like a big ball of nope. If I do “out” a species then I’d start the book a few years after they came out of the proverbial closet.

Are there traditional characteristics you absolutely wanted your dragons to have, or did you want to give them new abilities or powers?

My dragons are split into 4 septs. Red, Blue, Green, Silver. Each have their own specialty powers.

Red dragons are considered the guardians of dragons. They are known for their hot-temper but intense passion. They fiercely protect what is theirs, whether it is gold or their Mate. Red dragons are highly intelligent and have exceeded in modern times with the introduction of computers. They breathe and are immune to fire. Known for its large wings and forked tongue.

Blue dragons are known throughout mythology as “Sea Serpents.” They typically live near water and swim easily, unlike the other septs. Blue dragons can wield the most magic. They are excellent trackers and the most logical. Every move is planned and done with reason, because of this they are also the least likely to fight with the other septs. They are known for their vibrant color.

Green dragons are the most common. They make their homes in forests or mountainous regions. Powered by greed, they will do anything to get what they want. They have the ability to create a poison emitted through their breath or talons. Green dragons are of average intelligence and not overly aggressive, would rather scheme than fight. Green dragons are known for their cunning and laziness, always doing the least amount of work for the biggest payoff.

Silver (or Black dragons) are the least common. They make up the smallest sept but are the largest in size. Silver dragons are often solitary, living in caves or mountains. They are known for their healing abilities; however they do not share such. Silver only use their power for themselves.

What’s the ‘fun’ part about writing dragons?

I love stretching the limits with Dragons (or any supernatural being.) There is freedom to go crazy and stretch your imagination as far and wide as you can that contemporary just doesn’t have.

I know exactly what you mean and couldn't agree more! Are there other paranormal beings you enjoy writing? Do they live in the same universe as your dragons or are they strictly separate?

Wolves are my first love. I also love bears and big cats. My wolves don’t live in the same universe. At least, I’ve never addressed it. In my head they are different. However, my wolves, bears and soon to be cats do live in the same universe.

Do you have an all-time favorite dragon from movies, TV or books?

Well, I already mentioned Supernatural. It may sound weird but I don’t read much dragon PNR. I was almost done publishing my dragons when the big dragon boom happened but I was already onto wolves and immersed myself into that world.

Nice to be ahead of the curve! Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us today!

~ About the Author ~

K.C. Stewart is the self published author of the Hailey Holloway series and most recently, the Adirondack Pack series. All her life she had fantasized and day-dreamed on a regular basis but it wasn’t until she began writing short stories that she made those fantasies a reality. She has graduated to novels but still dabbles in the occasional flash fiction and short story. Because of her love for reading and the written word, K.C. is currently continuing her education at Clarion University for Library Science. When she isn’t taking photographs, studying or writing, she is supporting a very real gummy bear habit. Currently, she lives with her boyfriend, german shepherds and cats in central Pennsylvania.
